When it comes to online sports betting, it is perfectly reasonable to ask whether it is legal. After all, you don’t want to get yourself into a situation where you are at risk of going to jail. The answer to this question is relatively complicated. There are many laws – both federal and state – that might be used to go after people who bet online. In most states, though, people will not end up in trouble for participating in online sports betting. 

 

Federal law gives the government limited power to go after people who bet. The problem is that we still are not sure how the government views the internet. Some might interpret online sports betting as being done overseas, since the sites that take the bets are located offshore. Because of the uncertainty, the federal government does not go after players for online sports betting. In some cases, they might go after the people who take bets. This is completely different than going after players, though.

 

State sports betting laws can target players in some cases. The states have power to make their own laws on how to handle online sports betting. Washington state, for instance, has strong laws outlawing online sports betting. If you live there, you will want to be careful. Other states are passing laws to regulate sports betting, as well. The fact remains that online sports betting is possible in almost every state. Players are generally safe in their betting, so you should be able to participate with few worries.
